Agartala, 1st September 2025; Tension gripped South Champamura under Bishalgarh police station after a gang of thieves struck the Deshbandhu Colony Navodaya Sangh Club’s Kali Temple late Sunday night. The temple, a long-standing traditional center of faith, was vandalized and looted, leaving devotees shocked and fearful.
According to locals, the thieves broke open the temple door, forcibly removed the offering box with a stick, and decamped with an estimated 15,000–20,000 in cash, along with temple furniture. The gang also targeted a nearby house on the same night.
The residence of Pawan Das, BJP Booth President of Booth No. 50 under Kamalasagar Mandal, was burgled, and his Hero Honda Hunk motorcycle (TR01H6511) was stolen.
The shocking incident came to light on Monday morning when residents, out for a walk, discovered the temple’s broken offering box abandoned at a distance. Within moments, word spread, and devotees gathered at the temple premises in tears, expressing anguish at the desecration of their place of worship.
“We have never witnessed such an incident here. Now we are spending our nights in fear,” said one of the devotees.
The double theft — at the temple and the BJP leader’s house — has spread panic across the locality. Locals allege that a section of self-styled leaders, under the banner of the ruling party, are encouraging illegal activities, including the sale of intoxicants to local youth, which has worsened the law-and-order situation.
“People are afraid to speak out. If we protest against these leaders, we fear being attacked,” said a resident, blaming the growing drug menace for the spike in crime.
The matter has been reported to Bishalgarh police station, and investigations are underway. Residents are now awaiting swift action from the authorities to restore peace and security in the area.
