Agartala, 18th August 2025: Ten days after a violent assault and vehicle vandalism incident outside the Sekerkote Ektatan Sangha Club in the Kamalasagar Assembly constituency, no arrests have been made, prompting growing public concern over police inaction.
On the night of August 9, a group of club members allegedly attacked several individuals near the club premises. Among the victims was 28-year-old Papai Banik, who sustained critical injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital outside the state. Three others—Ajit Banik, Krishan Banik, and Suman Biswas—were admitted to a local hospital with moderate injuries.
Following the attack, Ajit Banik filed a formal complaint at Amtali Police Station. The case was registered under FIR No. 078/2025, invoking multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS): Section 126(2), Section 117(2), Section 304(2), Section 324(1), Section 45(B) and Section 3(5).
The accused named in the FIR include Siddhartha Shil, Samir Laskar, Biswajit Shil, Anup Das, and Bijoy Roy Choudhury—all reportedly affiliated with the Ektatan Sangha Club.
Amtali Officer-in-Charge Paritosh Das held a press conference two days after the incident, assuring the public that “no one involved will be spared.” He claimed that a statewide manhunt was underway. However, as of August 18, none of the accused have been apprehended, raising questions about the efficacy and intent of the investigation.
Local residents allege that the accused continue to roam freely in the Sekerkote Tea Garden area, with some reportedly using the upcoming Durga Puja festivities to exert pressure and extort donations. Eyewitnesses claim that nightly disturbances begin around 9 PM near the club, deterring commuters from using the nearby road after dark.
Sources also suggest that weapons including sticks and machetes are being stockpiled inside the club premises, heightening fears of further violence. Meanwhile, Ajit Banik’s family is reportedly facing pressure from unidentified groups to withdraw the case, though they remain determined to seek justice.
Repeated demands from local residents to suspend the club’s Durga Puja celebrations have been ignored, allegedly due to political influence shielding the accused. Critics argue that law enforcement is being undermined, allowing impunity to flourish.
