Agartala, 22nd February 2026:   A controversy has erupted in Nabagram Panchayat over development work funded by the local MLA’s fund. Allegations have surfaced that certain individuals obstructed the installation of street lights, sparking tension in the area.

It is reported that workers from a contractor’s firm began installing two street lights on February 20 last behind the Chintaharan Debnath Anganwadi Kendra, a densely populated locality. Local residents cooperated with the work, and one light was successfully installed. However, during the installation of the second light, a group of individuals allegedly intervened and stopped the work.

The complaint states that Nabagram Panchayat’s Upa-Pradhan, Bikash Das, along with Utpal Das, Karan Bhattacharjee, and Tapas Chowdhury, demanded that prior approval be taken from them before any such work could proceed. The contractor was reportedly forced to remove the already installed light, and threats were made that no future MLA-funded projects would be allowed in the area.

Today, MLA Nayan Sarkar of the Bamutia assembly constituency visited the site and spoke with residents. Locals highlighted that the area remains extremely dark at night and that the installation of the lights would have greatly benefited the community.

Speaking to media personnel, MLA Sarkar condemned the obstruction, stating that legal action would be taken against those responsible. He further announced that he would report the matter in writing to the Chief Minister and the Home Department.
