Agartala, 5th May 2026: A serious controversy has erupted in the Ranchi Tilla area under Jalai Gram Panchayat, within Gournagar Block of Kailashahar, after allegations surfaced that beef was being sold as mutton, triggering widespread unrest.
According to local reports, two young men—identified as Monsha Munda and Sujit Bhumiya, both from tea garden worker families—had allegedly been selling meat in the area for a long time, claiming it to be goat meat. Residents, mostly from the local Hindu community, recently grew suspicious about the quality of the meat being sold.
On Tuesday afternoon, tension escalated when locals reportedly caught the accused while they were cutting meat at their residence. They were allegedly confronted and beaten by an agitated crowd. A social worker, Apu Shil, reached the spot and questioned the two youths. During the interrogation, locals claim that the accused admitted to selling beef.
Following this, villagers allegedly forced the two men to perform humiliating acts, including squatting while holding their ears, and also cut their hair. The incident drew a large crowd and created a highly tense atmosphere in the locality.
The situation has raised concerns about law and order, as it remains unclear whether any formal complaint has been filed with the police so far. Authorities have reportedly taken note of the incident.
Questions are also being raised about whether others were involved, how long such alleged activities had been going on, and the source of the meat being sold. Tension continues to persist in the area, while the administration is said to be monitoring the situation closely in Gournagar Block.
