Agartala, 1st November 2025: A government-run school in Tripura’s Bishramganj area has become a stark symbol of the state’s deepening education crisis, where students from three different classes are being taught in a single classroom due to a severe shortage of infrastructure.
The Nonajala Senior Basic School, under Charilam Block Education Office, currently accommodates 57 students from Classes I to VIII. However, the school has only three functional classrooms, despite needing at least eight to conduct classes separately for each grade.
The situation is so dire that during the midday meal, three teachers are forced to stand guard to prevent stray dogs, goats, and cows from entering the premises, as the school lacks a designated kitchen or dining space for the Mid-Day Meal scheme.
“We treat all 57 students as our own children. But it pains me deeply that we are unable to provide them with even the most basic facilities,” said Sunil Debnath, the school’s headmaster.
The school’s infrastructure has deteriorated to dangerous levels. During the monsoon, leaking tin roofs soak students’ books and uniforms. In a recent incident, a portion of the classroom ceiling collapsed, injuring a student named Sabir Hossain.
In light of these alarming conditions, Debnath and his colleagues submitted a formal appeal to the state’s Education Department and the Education Minister on Saturday morning, urging immediate intervention to address the school’s infrastructural deficiencies.
The teachers hope their plea will prompt swift action to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for their students.
