Agartala, 2nd August 2025:   A major breakthrough in wildlife crime was reported from the Arvind Nagar Sonapur area under Gournagar Block, where three elephant tusks were recovered during a police search operation today. The accused identified as Mayub Ali is currently absconding.

Acting on a tip-off from confidential sources, a police team led by Kailashahar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Jayanta Karmakar raided the residence of Mayub Ali in Khaora Beel Gram Panchayat. The operation initially targeted suspected narcotics storage, but during the search, officers instead discovered three elephant tusks hidden inside a cupboard.

“We were expecting to find narcotic substances based on our intelligence inputs. However, during the detailed search, we recovered three elephant tusks, which is a serious offense under wildlife protection laws,” said SDPO Karmakar.

The Forest Department was immediately informed of the recovery. A team led by Range Officer Subhankar Biswas reached the location and took possession of the tusks.

“The tusks have been safely secured at the range office and will soon be sent for forensic analysis. We will take stringent legal action against the accused under relevant sections of the Forest Act,” confirmed Range Officer Biswas.

“The Forest Department and police are working jointly to root out wildlife crimes. Anyone found involved in the illegal preservation or trafficking of wildlife parts will face strict legal consequences,” said an official from the Forest Department.

A manhunt has been launched to trace Mayub Ali, and further investigations are underway.
