Agartala, 6th August 2025 :  Tripura Police have detained three individuals in connection with a violent robbery attempt that left an elderly man dead and his wife critically injured in Sepahijala district yesterday late night.

The incident occurred late Tuesday night in the Shri Durga Sangha area under the Grantali Gram Panchayat in Melaghar. According to police, a gang of thieves broke into the home of 80-year-old Ranjan Das and his wife, Namita Das (70), tied them up, and attacked them with sharp weapons. Ranjan Das died on the spot from his injuries, while Namita Das is currently undergoing treatment in a critical condition.

Upon receiving the information on Wednesday morning, a police team led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) from Sonamura Police Station rushed to the scene, cordoned off the area, and launched a full-scale investigation.

Local residents were left shocked by the gruesome incident. Neighbours said the couple had been living alone, with their three sons residing separately—one serving as a TSR jawan and the others involved in business in Agartala.

“We have detained three persons in connection with the incident. The investigation is underway,” said Tapas Das, Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura Police Station.

Former Union Minister and Member of Parliament Pratima Bhoumik visited the bereaved family and condemned the attack. Expressing serious concern over the law and order situation, she urged society to collectively stand against such acts of violence.

“This is a deeply disturbing crime. We must come together to ensure justice and help guide those who have strayed back onto the right path,” Bhoumik said, appealing to the families of the accused to cooperate with the investigation.
