Agartala, 15th October 2025: Three suspected Bangladeshi nationals were killed in a mob attack in the border area of Vidyabil village in Khowai District while allegedly attempting to steal cattle.
Officer-in-Charge of Champahower Police Station, Dilip Debbarma, said that the suspects entered the village earlier in the afternoon with the intention of stealing cattle. “Upon sensing the intruders, villagers resisted, prompting the suspects to attack with sharp weapons. Two locals were injured in the attack and were referred to GB Pant Hospital in critical condition,” he added.
In retaliation, an angry crowd surrounded the alleged cattle lifters and subjected them to a mob beating, resulting in their deaths at the scene. Police recovered the bodies and sent them for postmortem examination.
The incident has left the area tense, with residents expressing outrage over perceived gaps in border security and alleged inaction by authorities. Locals claimed that inadequate vigilance by the Border Security Force and Champahower police has allowed increased movement of intruders across the border.
Villagers also accused the administration of negligence, pointing to rampant cattle smuggling, drug trafficking, and circulation of intoxicants in the border region. They warned that unless patrolling and security measures are strengthened, such violent incidents could recur, and called for enhanced protection and swift justice.Police confirmed that further investigation into the incident is underway.
