Agartala, 13th August 2026 : The long-standing poor condition of the Srirampur-Golakpur road under the Chandipur Assembly constituency has once again triggered political debate, following an on-site inspection by State Minister for Social Welfare, Social Education and Labour Tinku Roy on Thursday morning.
Around 9 am, Roy, accompanied by officials of the concerned department, visited the road to assess its condition. The road has reportedly remained in a severely dilapidated state for years, causing considerable hardship to thousands of residents, particularly during the monsoon when potholes and waterlogging make movement difficult.
Speaking to reporters after the inspection, Minister Roy attributed the delay in the project to alleged negligence in the contracting process and obstruction by opposition political groups.
“It is Kailashahar’s misfortune that whenever a development project arises, politically motivated individuals create obstacles. They could be from the CPI(M) or the Congress. Many development projects have been hindered for this reason,” Roy said.
The Minister claimed that the tender for the road had been awarded nearly four years ago, before he became an MLA and before the present government came to power. He alleged that contractor Satyaban Das, after receiving the work order, did not execute the project himself and instead handed the responsibility to others, resulting in the work remaining incomplete.
According to Roy, the stalled project created legal and administrative complications, making it difficult to reallocate funds for the same work. He said that after overcoming these hurdles, the state government has now approved reconstruction of the road and work is expected to begin shortly.
Roy also said that drains would be constructed along both sides of the road to prevent waterlogging and protect the newly constructed surface from future damage. During the inspection, he interacted with adjoining landowners and sought their cooperation in providing small portions of land required for drain construction.
The Minister’s remarks have meanwhile sparked fresh political discussion in the area, with questions being raised over responsibility for the road remaining incomplete for nearly four years.
For local residents, however, the immediate priority is clear: they want the prolonged political controversy to end and the promised reconstruction to begin without further delay. The key question now is when work on the Srirampur-Golakpur road will actually commence and when residents will finally get relief from years of commuting difficulties.
