Agartala, 14th October 2025:  Social Education and Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy highlighted the cultural and moral responsibility of caring for elderly parents, calling it a cornerstone of Indian tradition.

Speaking as chief guest at a state-level celebration of International Day for Older Persons held at Agartala Town Hall, Roy urged sons, daughters and relatives to uphold this legacy and safeguard the rights of senior citizens.

The event, organized by the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education, saw Roy highlight legal provisions available for elderly parents whose children fail to provide care. “Every subdivision has a tribunal to address such cases,” he noted, reinforcing the government’s commitment to senior welfare.

Four senior citizens were honored for their resilience and contributions, including 106-year-old Aruna Prabha Majumdar of Dukli, Paschim district. The other recipients were Pramod Lal Ghosh, Sukhini Debbarma, and Shanti Ranjan Majumdar. Each was presented with a shawl, plaque, certificate, and ₹5,000 in recognition of their legacy.

In a bid to promote awareness, three clubs from West Tripura district were awarded for their outreach during Durga Puja. Mukti Sangha of Ramnagar secured the first prize, followed by Apanjan Sangha of Ranirbazar and Chaumuhani Sangha of Satdubiya, Mohanpur subdivision.

Three voluntary organizations Barajlar Abhiyan (Agartala), Abhay Mission (Ramnagar), and Voluntary Health Association of Tripura (Agartala) were also felicitated for their dedicated service to senior citizens.

A health camp held outside the venue provided free health and eye check-ups to 241 attendees, along with complimentary medicines.

The program featured discussions on senior citizen welfare schemes, including the Prime Minister Ayushman Yojana. Minister Roy was accompanied by Paschim Tripura Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Biswajit Shil, Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumdar, Social Welfare Secretary Tapas Roy, Department Director Tapan Kumar Das and Deputy Law Secretary Shankha Shuvro Dutta, who elaborated on legal measures to enhance support for citizens aged sixty and above.
