Agartala, 1st September 2023: In a significant development, opposition leader, Animesh Debbarma of TIPRA Motha, announced today that the party will adopt a hands-off approach just four days ahead of the upcoming by-election. During a press conference held this evening, Debbarma, who also serves as an MLA, expressed the party’s decision to refrain from instructing their supporters on how to cast their votes, leaving the ultimate choice entirely in the hands of the electorate.

Debbarma explained that initially, TIPRA Motha had contemplated not participating in these by-elections, as their primary focus was on seeking a “constitutional solution” to address the concerns of the tribal population in the state, rather than engaging in electoral competition.

In response to claims of opposition unity made by the CPIM, the Leader of the Opposition revealed that while discussions had taken place among opposition parties, the CPIM unilaterally announced its candidates without engaging in consultations with other parties, including TIPRA Motha and the Congress.

Debbarma emphasized that recent activities undertaken by their party in Dhanpur and Boxanagar were unrelated to the by-elections and instead aimed at strengthening their party’s organization.

Furthermore, Debbarma made it clear that TIPRA Motha has no political affiliations or alliances with other parties participating in the elections. As a result, they have pledged not to interfere with the voting choices of their supporters, respecting their autonomy. Regarding meetings between TIPRA Motha and the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, BK Hrangkhwal, the President of TIPRA Motha, expressed disappointment at the government’s lack of a positive response to their demands for a constitutional solution. He noted that a different course of action might have been considered if the government had been more receptive.
