Agartala, 29th September 2026 : A delegation of the TIPRA Motha Party (TMP) on Tuesday met Tripura State Election Commission officials and demanded immediate action over the alleged firing on a party candidate and two supporters during polling for the Village Committee elections in Gomati district on Monday.
The party submitted a memorandum to State Election Commission Secretary Anurag Sen, alleging that its candidate and supporters were attacked by armed miscreants during polling at Gamaria Village Committee under Matarbari RD Block.
The delegation was led by senior TMP leader and MLA Ranjit Debbarma and included TTAADC Chief Executive Member Runiel Debbarma, District Council Member Suraj Debbarma, MLA Biswajit Kalai and MDC Sujoy Uchoi.
According to the memorandum, TMP candidate Kachindra Reang, 36, along with party supporters Naithok Jamatia, 26, and Udairam Reang, 40, came under attack at Wareng Bari Ward No. 2 during polling hours.
The party alleged that Kachindra Reang sustained a gunshot injury to his abdomen, while Udairam Reang was shot in the leg. Kachindra was later referred to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala for treatment. The memorandum claimed that his condition was critical.
The TMP said an FIR had been registered at the concerned police station in connection with the incident and demanded that those responsible be arrested at the earliest.
Speaking to reporters after meeting the SEC, MLA Ranjit Debbarma said the party had given the authorities 24 hours to arrest the accused.
“We have met the SEC over the firing incident and demanded the arrest of the accused within 24 hours. If no action is taken, we will decide our next course of action,” Debbarma said.
He also alleged that police had failed to take action despite several hours having passed since the incident. According to him, the party had provided information regarding those allegedly involved in the attack.
The TMP termed the incident a serious concern for the conduct of the electoral process and urged the State Election Commission to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of candidates and voters.
The party also demanded security for the injured candidate and his family, as well as for other candidates and party workers in the area. It further sought increased security deployment in and around Gamaria VC to prevent any further violence, intimidation or retaliatory incidents following the polling.
