Agartala, 14th April 2026: South Tripura district has erupted in tension following post-poll violence and allegations of police excesses during the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections. On April 12, Tipra Motha supporters intercepted a bus carrying EVMs from the Muhuripur-Buratli constituency after spotting outsiders inside the vehicle. During the protest, a TSR (Tripura State Rifles) jawan allegedly assaulted the party’s district secretary, Supriya Choudhury, by kicking her and resorting to lathi-charge.
The incident, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, has sparked outrage across the state. In response, Tipra Motha leaders, including MLA Ranjit Debbarma and several women leaders, submitted a memorandum to the South Tripura Superintendent of Police demanding strict action against the accused jawan.
Speaking to the press after the deputation, Debbarma said, “The SP has acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and assured us of legal action. But we will not stop here. A formal complaint will be lodged with the Tripura Human Rights Commission. In a democracy, such brutality against a woman leader is unacceptable. We will fight this legally to the end.”
Political observers note that Debbarma’s direct involvement has intensified pressure on the administration. The coming days will reveal whether disciplinary action is taken against the accused TSR personnel, a move seen as crucial in easing the growing tension between the party and the authorities.
