Agartala, 11th February 2025:   Tripura government has submitted four Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) to the Centre, proposing large-scale bamboo plantations to tackle climate change, said Animesh Debbarma, Minister of Science and Technology Department.

Speaking at a one-day workshop on “Role of Bamboo in Climate Change Mitigation” at the Bamboo and Cane Development Institute (BCDI) in Lichu Bagan, Agartala, the minister highlighted the state’s proactive steps in addressing global warming.

“Climate change is a significant challenge. The Climate Change Department, under the Science and Technology Department, has been actively working to raise awareness about climate change and its mitigation strategies. The absence of trees and bamboo accelerates climate change, so we are prioritizing afforestation efforts. While adaptation is essential, mitigation is equally crucial,” Debbarma stated.

He emphasized that the state government, in collaboration with the National Bamboo Mission, is intensifying awareness programs across different levels, from students to farmers.  “A few days ago, we held discussions with farmers at the College of Agriculture, and similar interactions will be organized across the state. Additionally, we have sought financial support from the Centre and other agencies. We have requested the North Eastern Council (NEC) to provide funds for bamboo and tree plantation. So far, four DPRs have been submitted, and more are in the pipeline,” he said.

Highlighting bamboo’s environmental benefits, the minister noted that it can absorb 35% more carbon dioxide than regular trees.“With a 70% bamboo plantation, carbon absorption is equivalent to 100 trees. Moreover, bamboo releases 30% more oxygen than conventional trees. This makes large-scale bamboo cultivation crucial in our fight against climate change,” Debbarma added.
