Agartala, 12th September 2024: As the city of Agartala gears up for the vibrant Durga Puja, a joint initiative by the traffic police, Agartala Municipal Corporation and the Transport Department has been launched to address the chronic issue of traffic jams.
Today the operation kicked off with a focus on illegal parking from Post Office Chaumuhani to Kaman Chaumuhani.
During the operation, numerous illegally parked vehicles, particularly bikes, were fined. A car was towed away by crane, while a notice was issued to an auto for violating parking regulations. According to an official from the Transport Department, this campaign aims to ensure smoother movement for residents ahead of Durga Puja. “We have repeatedly warned vehicle owners about illegal parking, and today we’re taking action,” the official stated, hinting that similar drives will continue.
However, despite these efforts, Agartala’s traffic jams remain a constant struggle for commuters. Critics argue that while authorities focus on superficial clean-ups, deeper systemic issues — such as alleged bribery by traffic officers at intersections — still contribute to the daily chaos. The success of this latest campaign, and whether it brings lasting relief, remains to be seen.
