Agartala, 12th October 2025: On the night of Maha Ashtami, a tragic road accident occurred in the Dighalbak area of Dharmanagar. In the incident, father Abhijit Debnath and his son Abhiroop Debnath were seriously injured after being hit by a speeding vehicle. Abhiroop Debnath later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment outside the state.

Following the incident, a case was registered at Dharmanagar Police Station. However, for unknown reasons, the police delayed arresting the driver responsible for the accident. Under mounting pressure, the police finally arrested the accused driver, Souvik Nath, on Saturday night.

The Dharmanagar police station officer-in-charge stated that initially the case was filed under a section eligible for bail. After Abhiroop Debnath’s death, the police applied to the court to add a non-bailable section, under which the driver was subsequently arrested.

On Sunday, the arrested driver was presented in court, which sent him to police custody until 24th October. According to the police, the accused allegedly did not stop after hitting the father and son the first time but drove a short distance before returning to hit them again.
