Agartala, 3rd May 2024 :  A tragic accident took place at Durgacherra area under Chailengta police station in Longtharai Valley sub-division as a lorry crashed causing death of one individual and serious injuries to two others. The accident took place today at around 5:30 pm, when a flower sweeper vehicle bearing the registration number TR05B-1756, en route from Chawmanu to Manu, lost control and overturned by the roadside.

The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Nayanmala Chakma, who was tragically returning home from work when she was caught under the overturned lorry and succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The driver of the vehicle Mitu Das and Forest Department employee Paritosh Bhowmik, sustained severe injuries in the mishap.

Authorities from the Chailengta police station, along with the fire brigade left to the site upon notification of the accident. The injured were swiftly rescued and transported to the Chailengta sub-district hospital for urgent medical attention. Meanwhile, the body of Chakma was moved to the Shailendra Hospital morgue to undergo a post-mortem examination.

Preliminary reports from witnesses suggest that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Additionally, there are allegations that the vehicle was carrying a load beyond its capacity, a practice purportedly common among vehicles operating as sweepers in the area. This has raised concerns about the oversight of the Forest Department and local police administration, with accusations of an illegal trade of flower sweepers thriving in Chawmanu, allegedly facilitated by bribes.

The untimely demise of Nayanmala Chakma has cast a pall of sorrow over the community, as residents mourn the loss of a fellow citizen.
