Agartala, 31st December 2024:   The Transport Department has taken decisive action against the illegal issuance of permits, announcing that newly issued permits will be cancelled. This move comes after it was revealed that no permits are currently being issued in the Agartala Municipal Corporation area. Liton Modak, General Secretary of the West Tripura District Auto Rickshaw Mazdoor Sangha shared this information with reporters today.

The issue came to light on December 25 when auto drivers from GB Bazar raised concerns about the illegal issuance of permits in the Agartala Municipal Corporation area. They reported that for several days, auto drivers from the Panchayat area, stretching from GB to Banikya Chowmuhani had been providing passenger services within the Agartala Municipal Corporation. Upon contacting the Transport Department, it was found that permits were indeed being issued for this area, prompting the auto drivers to go on a one-day strike in protest.

In response to the media coverage of the illegal permits, the Transport Department took swift action. Speaking to reporters, Liton Modak stated, “The Transport Department had illegally issued new auto permits on GB to Banikya Chowmuhani Road. In protest, battery-powered auto drivers joined the demonstration.”

Following the media reports, the Transport Department reached out to the protesting auto drivers to address the issue. “The department informed us that the newly issued permits would be cancelled, as no permits are currently being issued in the Agartala Municipal Corporation area,” Modak explained.

The drivers expressed their gratitude for the department’s strict action. “We thank the authorities for taking this decisive step to resolve the problem,” said one of the drivers.
