Date:

Agartala, 2nd May 2026:   The Hiranmoy Chakraborty Memorial Foundation hosted a unique cultural programme titled “Jayi Pran, Chira-Pran” at Sukanta Academy on Friday evening, drawing a packed audience and heartfelt tributes to the late dramatist and administrator Hiranmoy Chakraborty.

The event combined remembrance of Chakraborty with a special homage to literary icon Sukumar Ray. Popular artistes from across the state presented recitation, music, dance, drama, and a film-based narrative under the segment “Sukumar Samaroh”, which left spectators deeply moved. Organisers noted that such a Sukumar Ray-centric programme had never before been staged in Tripura.

In keeping with its social commitment, the Foundation also felicitated Gobin, an HIV-positive individual who has overcome addiction, as a gesture of encouragement.

Speakers enriched the evening with reflections on Chakraborty’s life and legacy. Poet and essayist Prof. Mihir Deb highlighted his integrity and dedication, while retired Odisha High Court Chief Justice Subhasis Talapatra discussed Chakraborty’s acclaimed book “Nirbachan: Ganatantrer Janopath” and its insights on democracy. He also spoke on the literary contributions of Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury, Sukumar Ray, and Satyajit Ray to children’s literature. MBB University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Bibhas Deb lauded the exceptional nature of the programme and honoured participating artistes and cultural figures.

Renowned children’s author Bimlendra Chakraborty shared perspectives on Sukumar Ray’s creations and recited his own poetry inspired by Ray. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Sumanta Chakraborty, who emphasized the importance of organizing such events annually to celebrate Sukumar Ray’s timeless works.

The “Sukumar Samaroh” was brought to life by Shruti, Kabilalok, Tanushree Creation, and a team of performers including Uday Shankar Bhattacharya, Subhasis Choudhury, Pinakpani Deb, Smita Bhattacharya, Subhasis Kar, Tanushree Das, Tanmoy Debnath, Parijat Dutta, Indrakshi Poddar, and Anshushriya Ghosh. Sound design was managed by Soumendra Nandi, Soumyajit Nandi, and Shubhajit Nandi.

Hiranmoy Chakraborty, remembered as a shining star in Tripura’s cultural and administrative spheres, served for decades in the Election Department of the Tripura Civil Secretariat. Post-retirement, he devoted himself to writing, acting, and social work. His book “Nirbachan: Ganatantrer Janopath” remains a significant document on democracy. In recognition of his theatrical excellence, he received the Tripuresh Majumdar Centenary Theatre Memorial Award in 2014. Chakraborty passed away in 2018, leaving behind a rich legacy of art, literature, and public service.
