Agartala, 13th March 2026: The Tripura Legislative Assembly is set to elect its new Speaker on March 18, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced today. In addition, seven new bills will be introduced during this year’s budget session.
Minister Nath spoke after an urgent meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) held this afternoon. He said that Governor Indrasena Reddy delivered the customary speech on the opening day of the Assembly session.
“Following the Governor’s address, the acting Speaker convened a BAC meeting. While the first BAC meeting did not discuss matters related to the Speaker’s election, today a proposal regarding it was raised,” Nath explained.
He outlined the schedule for the Speaker’s election: “On March 16, the Speaker-in-charge will announce the election. Nomination papers can be submitted on March 17, which will also allow time for scrutiny and withdrawal. If there is only one candidate, the Speaker will be declared elected on March 18. If multiple nominations are received, a ballot will be conducted, and this will be finalized on March 17.”
Regarding legislative business, Minister Nath noted that the first BAC meeting had initially proposed three bills. Now, an additional seven bills have been included in the agenda. These are the Tripura Lift and Escalators Bill, Tripura Guaranteed Services to Citizens Bill, Tripura Ease of Doing Business 2026 Bill, MBB University Amendment Bill, Science, Technology, and Allied Skill University Bill, Atal Vihar Bajpayee Skill University Bill, and the International University Bill.
“The Speaker-in-charge called the BAC meeting to revise the agenda. After obtaining our approval, the adjustments were confirmed,” Nath added.
