Agartala, 26th September 2026 : After decades of service at airports across the country, senior aviation professional Sekhar Debbarma has returned to his home state to take charge as the Airport Director of Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala.
For Debbarma, the new assignment is more than a professional responsibility. Born and brought up in Tripura, he described his return as an emotional homecoming and said his long-standing association with Agartala made the posting particularly significant.
Debbarma began his aviation career in Kolkata in 1995 as an Air Traffic Control Manager. Over the years, he served in different capacities at Agartala and Guwahati before becoming Airport Director at Agartala during his earlier tenure from 2004 to 2022.
He was subsequently promoted as General Manager and served at the airports in Delhi and Kolkata before being posted to Ahmedabad. He left Agartala on September 27, 2024, and returned to Tripura on September 25, 2026, to assume his latest responsibility.
Speaking during an interaction at the airport, Debbarma said his roots in Tripura give him a strong personal connection with the institution and the people it serves. He expressed his commitment to contributing to the airport’s further development and improving its role in serving the state.
The new Airport Director also stressed the need to give greater visibility to Tripura’s local products and language within the airport. Referring to the Prime Minister’s call for being “vocal for local,” he said efforts would be made to promote local products and the local language in the interest of the state.
With extensive experience in airport administration and air traffic control, coupled with his earlier association with Agartala airport, Debbarma’s return has attracted attention in Tripura. His new tenure is expected to focus on the effective functioning and continued development of Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport.
