Tripura CM Rejects Opposition Allegations Over Unakoti Incident, Says Police Acting Effectively

Agartala, 11th January 2026:  Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha today criticized opposition parties for spreading misleading claims about the recent unrest in Unakoti district, asserting that their comments are aimed at confusing the public. He emphasized that the police have been given full authority to handle law and order situations and are performing their duties diligently.

The remarks come in the wake of tensions that erupted yesterday in the Saydarpara–Shimultala area under the Fatikroy police station, following a dispute over puja subscriptions that escalated into vandalism and arson. Opposition leaders had alleged that the government and Tripura Police failed to respond effectively to the situation.

Addressing the issue, Dr. Saha said he immediately contacted Minister Tinku Roy, who represents Unakoti, as well as local officials to ensure prompt action and maintain peace. “I also spoke with the Superintendent of Police and the District Magistrate to take strict measures against those involved. So far, about five individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident,” he added.

Responding to criticism of police inaction, the Chief Minister stressed that law enforcement agencies are addressing incidents throughout the state. He also reminded the opposition of past violence during the CPI(M) regime, noting that similar incidents had occurred in Mandwi and Khowai, which resulted in deaths, including those of journalists, and even the killing of a minister.

“It is important not to make political statements unnecessarily. The police are carrying out their responsibilities, and those responsible for the unrest have been arrested. Such comments from the opposition are only intended to mislead the public,” Dr. Saha said.

He concluded by reiterating that the government remains committed to ensuring peace and harmony across Tripura.
