Agartala, 12th July 2025: Tripura Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy on Saturday alleged that opposition party workers are facing repeated attacks from groups of unruly youths allegedly backed by a sitting Member of Parliament. He also demanded the immediate rollback of the recent hikes in electricity tariffs and house taxes.
Speaking during a door-to-door campaign opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat programme, Roy questioned the BJP’s stance on smart meters.
“If smart meters are beneficial for the public, then why is the BJP protesting against them elsewhere? Why shouldn’t Tripura also implement such measures if they are indeed good?” he asked.
The Congress MLA criticized the state government for imposing what he described as “burdensome” financial policies on citizens. “The government has hiked electricity tariffs and house taxes, and imposed several other levies that are hurting common people. We demand an immediate rollback of all these decisions. The state must convene an all-party meeting to discuss and decide such matters collectively,” Roy said.
He also urged Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to take strict action against those involved in the alleged attacks on opposition workers.“We are repeatedly being targeted. A Member of Parliament recently accused us of working with unruly elements. I challenge them to name even one such person. In truth, the individuals involved in these attacks are associated with that very MP—who was defeated in the 2023 elections,” Roy claimed.
The Congress leader said the party would continue its protest across the state until their demands are addressed.
