Agartala, 3rd January 2026: In line with the directive of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the Tripura Transport Department has declared January 2026 as the “Zero Fatality Month” as part of its Road Safety Campaign.
The primary aim of this initiative is to promote the message that road accident-related deaths can be prevented and reduced through coordinated, data-driven interventions.
The central government has appointed the Save Life Foundation (SLF) to provide technical support to states for implementing the Zero Fatality Month initiative. SLF has previously achieved a reduction of 30 to 60 percent in road accident fatalities in accident-prone areas across the country.
The month-long campaign in Tripura will focus on three key areas: data-driven risk identification, implementation of safety measures, and monitoring and review.
As part of the initiative, each district will identify the three most dangerous road corridors (at least 5 km each) and analyze factors such as accident timing, high-risk road users, and accident types. Based on baseline data, necessary interventions will be prioritized and implemented.
For safety measures, authorities will focus on speed control, road markings and signage, separate facilities for pedestrians, improved lighting, installation of dividers, median gap treatment, and upgrading key roads and junctions. Other measures include preventing drunk driving, speeding, wrong-side driving, driving without seat belts or helmets, and ensuring ambulance and trauma care facilities near accident-prone zones. Awareness campaigns targeting commercial drivers, transport operators, schools, colleges, and the general public will also be conducted.
Monitoring and review will be conducted through weekly district-level task force meetings, with reports submitted regularly. Mid-January 2026 will see a state-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary or the designated nodal officer. Departments including Transport, Police, Health, Education, urban and rural local bodies, and district administrations will actively participate in this effort.
The initiative not only aims to prevent accidents during January 2026 but also to contribute to long-term targets. India aims to reduce road accident fatalities by 50 percent by 2030 at the national level. The Tripura Transport Department issued this statement emphasizing the importance of coordinated action and public awareness in achieving a safer road environment.
