Tripura Enforces Austerity Measures, Introduces 50% Work-From-Home for Govt Staff

Date:

Agartala, 13TH May 2026:  In a move aimed at reducing government expenditure and conserving fuel, the Government of Tripura has announced a new austerity directive mandating rotational work-from-home arrangements for employees.

Issued by the General Administration (Administrative Reforms) Department, the order follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal encouraging citizens and institutions to minimize fuel consumption and adopt remote working wherever possible.

Under the new guidelines, Heads of Departments (HoDs) have been instructed to ensure that only 50 per cent of Group C and Group D employees attend office each day, while the remaining staff work from home on a rotational weekly basis.

Departments have also been directed to prepare weekly attendance rosters, with priority during the first week given to employees residing closer to their workplaces.

Employees assigned to work from home must remain accessible through telephone and electronic communication and report to office immediately if required for urgent duties.

The government has further advised Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), autonomous bodies, statutory bodies, local bodies, and subordinate offices across the state to implement similar measures.

However, the order clarified that employees engaged in essential and emergency services will remain exempt from the directive.

The memorandum, issued by Special Secretary A.K. Bhattacharya, has come into effect immediately and will remain operational until further notice.
