Agartala, 7th April 2026: Agartala witnessed the 39th Convocation of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on Tuesday, with the regional ceremony organized at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan. Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu inaugurated the event, describing it as “a celebration of resilience, ambition, and the democratization of knowledge.”
Highlighting IGNOU’s pivotal role in distance education, the Governor emphasized its impact in Tripura through the Agartala Regional Centre and its branches. He noted that the university has opened doors for learners in remote hill areas, married women unable to continue studies, and economically weaker sections who cannot afford hostel fees or costly textbooks. He stressed that IGNOU’s fee structure remains far more affordable compared to private colleges.
Governor Nallu also recalled earlier systems like evening colleges, which offered opportunities to working individuals, and said IGNOU has expanded such access through its distance learning model. Referring to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, he pointed out that IGNOU provides not only higher education but also vocational training opportunities. He urged students to take advantage of the university’s offerings.
Professor Chandra Shekhar Putta, Director of IGNOU’s Agartala Regional Centre, stated that since its inception 25 years ago, 7,748 students have pursued education through the centre. This year, 1,457 students from Tripura received certificates for degree and diploma courses.
As part of the Central Government’s Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, the Agartala Regional Centre has adopted five villages—Tulakona, Bikramnagar, Anandnagar, Malaynagar, and Laxmilunga—for educational development initiatives. During the ceremony, Governor Nallu personally handed certificates to graduating students.
