Agartala, 26th July 2025:   In a significant push towards strengthening the rural economy and ensuring fair prices for farmers, the Government of Tripura has launched the Kharif season paddy procurement drive at Minimum Support Price (MSP) in Sabroom sub-division of South Tripura district.

The initiative was officially inaugurated by Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury at a grand ceremony held at the Brajendranagar Hospital ground this afternoon. The state government will procure paddy at Rs 23 per kilogram with a target of purchasing around 30,000 metric tonnes directly from farmers.

“This government has been working relentlessly since 2018 to double farmers’ income. Unlike the previous regime that failed to protect farmers’ interests for 25 years, our administration is committed to modernizing agriculture and securing farmers’ livelihoods,” said Minister Chowdhury.

The Minister also inaugurated the newly constructed ‘Battala’ Rural Agricultural Market, developed at a cost of Rs 43 lakh, which will serve as a key infrastructure support system for local farmers. He added that modern facilities are being developed across all agricultural sub-divisions, including provision of fertilizers, seeds, tools, training, and knowledge through ‘Krishak Bandhu Kendras’ and ‘Farmers’ Knowledge Centers’.

Farmers arrived in large numbers with their produce on the very first day of procurement, a sign of growing trust in the government’s intervention. “This scheme brings hope and financial relief to small and marginal farmers,” said one of the attending cultivators.

The event was also attended by Dakshin Tripura Zilla Sabhadhipati Dipak Datta, Minister Shukla Charan Noatia, Manu MLA Mailafru Mog, Agriculture Officer Debapriya Bardhan, District Magistrate Sajjad P, and Sabroom SDM Shibajyoti Datta among others.

Officials and experts believe the MSP-based procurement will help stabilize market prices and empower farmers economically, bolstering Tripura’s agrarian economy.
