Tripura govt to bear over 100 crore power cost burden through subsidy: CM Dr Manik Saha

Agartala, 21st   August 2026 :

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said the state government has decided to provide a subsidy of more than ₹100 crore to shield electricity consumers from the impact of rising power costs.

Dr. Saha said the issue came to his attention while he was in Delhi, and after returning to the state, he immediately held discussions with the Education Minister, Finance Minister, Chief Secretary and senior officials on measures to provide relief to consumers.

“Ultimately, I realized that we would have to provide a subsidy,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the proposal was discussed with the Finance Minister and approved by the state Cabinet on Thursday.

He said people have every right to protest if they face difficulties, but the government has now taken concrete steps to address their concerns.

Explaining the reasons behind the rise in electricity costs, Dr. Saha pointed to the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions between Iran and the United States, which have contributed to a sharp increase in gas prices and, consequently, power generation costs.

“Despite our well-known financial constraints, we have arranged for a subsidy of over ₹100 crore so that the burden does not fall on the common people,” he said.

The Chief Minister said the government’s priority is to ensure that rising power costs do not create additional hardship for households across Tripura.
