Tripura Gramin Bank will go much beyond 15,000 crore: Sushanta Chowdhury

Date:

Agartala, 22nd  August 2026 :  Tripura’s Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Saturday praised the contribution of Tripura Gramin Bank to the state’s rural economy, agriculture and MSME sectors, saying the bank has established itself as a major institution in Tripura’s financial landscape.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Tripura Gramin Bank Officers’ Association’s Annual General Conference in Agartala, Chowdhury said the bank, despite operating in a small state, has achieved significant growth since its inception in 1976.

According to the Minister, the bank now has 154 branches across Tripura, compared to just four branches when it began operations. He said its total business volume has crossed ₹15,000 crore, while net profit has exceeded ₹184 crore, reflecting a steady upward trend.

Chowdhury said the bank has earned the trust of people, particularly in rural areas, through its work in agriculture, microfinance and the MSME sector. He described the institution as a “son of the soil” and said several state government departments maintain deposits with the bank because of the confidence placed in its services.

The Minister also highlighted the transformation of banking services, noting the introduction of ATM facilities, digital banking and stronger security mechanisms. He said Tripura Gramin Bank is keeping pace with technological changes and taking measures to protect customers from financial fraud.

Referring to the broader economic picture, Chowdhury stressed that strengthening the rural economy, agriculture, MSMEs and the banking sector is essential for achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. He said development cannot be achieved by leaving any sector or section of society behind.

Chowdhury also expressed optimism about the possibility of the bank entering the capital market in the future. He said if an IPO is launched, he believes people of Tripura would show strong interest in investing in their own Gramin Bank, calling such a development a major achievement for the state.

Congratulating the Officers’ Association on its annual conference, the Minister urged its members to work with sincerity and dedication and to focus on customer-friendly initiatives. He expressed confidence that the association would play a greater role in strengthening the bank and enabling it to compete with larger banking institutions in the years ahead.

Among those present were Sagar Joshi, President of the All India Regional Rural Banking Officers’ Forum/Federation; Srijan Kumar Pal, General Secretary of the All India Regional Rural Bank Officers’ Federation; the President and General Secretary of the Tripura Gramin Bank Officers’ Association; and the Secretary of the All India Bank Officers’ Confederation.
