Agartala, 4th April 2026: In a bid to press for immediate settlement of long-pending dues, the Joint Action Committee of Tripura Jute Mill workers submitted a mass deputation to the mill’s Managing Director today.
The program began with a colorful procession through various parts of the city before reaching the Managing Director’s office, where a memorandum was formally handed over. The initiative was led by committee convener Dhanmani Singh, accompanied by Narayan Chandra Debnath, Sushil Sarkar, Pradip Debnath, Shibani Das Chakraborty, Bhajan Debnath, and Ganga Kalai, among others.
Workers alleged that despite repeated court directives, the management has failed to clear outstanding wages and benefits. They pointed out that on March 30, 2026, the mill authorities assured the High Court that payments would be made in line with the Fourth Pay Commission. In an affidavit, the management acknowledged a list of 1,637 workers, of whom dues for 407 have already been cleared. The remaining 1,231 workers were promised payments with 528 to be settled by April 30 and the rest within six months.
The workers’ demands include: Immediate clearance of all dues for employees serving since 1996; Mandatory issuance of pay slips, IPS, and service clearance certificates; Rectification of irregularities in leave salary and house rent payments; Publication of a complete list of beneficiaries; Withdrawal of eviction notices against residents; and Housing arrangements for homeless workers.
The Joint Committee warned that failure to meet these demands promptly would trigger a larger movement. They vowed to continue their struggle until workers’ rightful claims are honored.
