Agartala, 10th January 2025: During the Winter Session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, members commemorated former Prime Minister and eminent economist Dr. Manmohan Singh. Speaker Biswabandhu Sen announced with deep sorrow that Dr. Singh passed away at 9:51 am on December 26 at AIIMS Hospital, New Delhi, at the age of 92. He had been suffering from old age-related ailments.
Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah village of undivided Punjab, Dr. Singh’s family migrated to India after the partition. He was a distinguished scholar, earning degrees from Punjab University, Cambridge University, and Oxford University.
Dr. Singh’s illustrious career included roles at the United Nations, Delhi School of Economics, Chief Economic Advisor to the Central Government, Finance Secretary, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and Finance Minister. As Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, he led India through significant economic reforms and stability.
The Assembly observed two minutes of silence in his honor, expressing heartfelt condolences to his family. Dr. Singh is survived by his wife Gursharan Kaur and their three daughters.
