Agartala, 30th June 2025: CPI(M) Politburo member and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chowdhury today launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led government in Tripura, accusing it of undermining democratic values and failing to maintain law and order in the state.
Addressing the media, Chowdhury said that an “undemocratic and abnormal situation” is prevailing across Tripura, with the BJP allegedly stripping people — and even its own party members — of their democratic rights.
“Democracy is being slaughtered in Tripura day by day. The BJP is killing democracy with its own hands,” Chowdhury said. He alleged that those who once voted the BJP to power are now disillusioned by the deteriorating situation in the state.
The senior CPI(M) leader further claimed that law and order in Tripura has reached its lowest point, but the government has remained indifferent. “The Chief Minister, Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, is not taking any initiative to control the situation. Instead, the BJP is trying to stay in power by capitalising on terror,” he alleged.
Chowdhury said that the discontent is not limited to the opposition, but is widely shared among the general public. “It is not just us — the majority of people in Tripura feel that law and order has collapsed,” he said.
The opposition has repeatedly accused the BJP of stifling dissent and suppressing opposition voices in the state through intimidation and violence. Chowdhury’s remarks come at a time when political tensions continue to simmer in Tripura, ahead of crucial civic and local body elections.
