Agartala, 19th June 2026: With the rising cases of violence against women, the Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress took to the streets of capital city today, organizing a massive rally to demand justice for Manisha Das. Carrying party flags and holding banners that read “Justice for Manisha,” the protestors marched through the city toward the DGP office while raising sharp slogans against the state government.
Manisha Das, a young employee at the Santiniketan Medical College, was found dead on June 10 under suspicious circumstances. Speaking to reporters during the march, a Mahila Congress leader accused the administration of trying to sweep the matter under the rug. She heavily criticized the State Women’s Commission for quickly labeling the death a suicide without waiting for a thorough investigation.
“Violence and attacks on women have peaked under this government,” the leader said, alleging a cover-up. The protestors outright rejected the government’s proposal for a magisterial inquiry, pointing out that previous inquiries—like the one into the Kumarghat incident—never made their findings public. Instead, they are demanding an independent judicial probe headed by a sitting High Court judge to ensure an unbiased investigation.
The protest also tapped into growing frustration over student issues, with the leader hitting out at the BJP government over continuous exam scams, including the national NEET paper leaks and CBSE irregularities that have put the future of the youth at risk.
The Mahila Congress has warned that if the state fails to initiate a proper judicial check into Manisha’s death immediately, they will escalate their agitation into a larger, state-wide movement.
