Agartala, 30th January 2025: Acting on a tip-off, the Kalamchaura police destroyed approximately 40,000 cannabis plants and arrested several cannabis farmers. This operation is part of the Tripura government’s ongoing anti-drug campaign.
Today, a joint operation by the police, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), and Border Security Force (BSF) took place in South Kalamchaura Baidar Dongo, Artaki Mora, and Hasher Dongo. The police and their counterparts destroyed and burned around 40,000 mature cannabis plants, causing a significant stir among local cannabis farmers.
The special operation, conducted from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., was led by Kalamchaura police station Officer-in-Charge Nadu Gopal Deb, Sub-Inspector Biswajit Debbarma, and Inspector Bijendra Singh of the 49 Battalion BSF. OC Nadu Gopal Deb led the campaign, which uncovered illegal cannabis cultivation on forest land in two areas of Kalamchaura. The total area covered spanned 15 acres across four plots.
“The cannabis plants were in a ripe state and could have supplied large quantities of drugs. However, due to our timely campaign, we successfully destroyed the cultivation,” explained OC Nadu Gopal Deb. He added, “The government is committed to building a drug-free Tripura. We are taking strict measures to stop cannabis cultivation and create a drug-free society. This effort requires cooperation from all levels of society.” He urged the public for their active participation and support.
Despite the current government’s emphasis on anti-cannabis and drug-related initiatives, complete eradication of cannabis cultivation remains a challenge. While there was a slight decline in such cultivation after the BJP-led government came to power in 2018, recent trends indicate a resurgence, particularly in areas under Kamalnagar, Gatigarh, Sonamura, and Kalamchaura police stations.
“The problem cannot be resolved solely through legal measures. Building a drug-free Tripura necessitates social awareness and the active involvement of the community,” stated a police spokesperson. This campaign aims not only to combat illegal cannabis cultivation but also to protect the youth from the perils of addiction.
The successful operation in the Kalamchaura area marks a significant achievement for the Tripura Police. The Kalamchaura police station assured that similar campaigns will continue in the future, reflecting their ongoing commitment to the anti-drug cause.
