Agartala, 8th June 2024:     Workers and drivers involved in power line repair work have staged a protest in front of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited’s office in Agartala city on Saturday demanding an eight-hour workday, increased wages and job security.

“For the last three years, around 150 linemen and vehicle drivers have been employed under Vision Plus, a subsidiary of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited,” said one of the protesting electricity workers. “We were promised annual salary increases by the power department, but after three years, our wages have remained stagnant. Currently, linemen earn Rs 10,500 and drivers Rs 7,700, which is barely enough to support our families.”

The worker further highlighted the grueling work hours, stating, “We are being forced to work 12-hour shifts instead of the standard eight hours. This is why we had no choice but to demonstrate today.”

The protesters have vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are addressed.
