Agartala,  19th December 2025:    The Agartala Press Club has strongly condemned recent attacks by fundamentalist groups on journalists and media outlets in Bangladesh, including vandalism at the offices of leading newspapers Prothom Alo and The Daily Star. The Club demanded immediate resumption of their publications, adequate compensation for damages, and the release of imprisoned journalists.

Secretary Ramakanta Dey in a press communiqué described the incidents including arrests and killings of journalists as a grave assault on press freedom and democracy.

Meanwhile, the Tripura Electronics Media Society also voiced deep concern over the continuous repression of the media in Bangladesh. Secretary Sourajit Pal said the attacks and forced shutdowns of newspapers were “barbaric” and called for unconditional release of detained journalists, full security for media institutions, and protection of democratic values.

Both organizations stressed that independent journalism is vital to democracy and any interference amounts to stifling its foundation.
