Agartala, 8th January 2026:  Tripura witnessed its lowest crime rate in 20 years in 2025, with an overall 8.3% drop compared to 2024, Director General of Police Anurag said on Thursday.

A total of 3,698 crimes were reported in 2025, down from 4,033 in 2024. Property offences fell by 16.04%, with 293 cases in 2025 compared to 349 the previous year. Murders declined by 18.10%, with 95 reported cases versus 116 in 2024. Cases of hurt and assault dropped 14.2%, from 815 to 699, while riots decreased by 26%, with 17 incidents in 2025 against 23 in 2024. Crimes against women also fell, with 665 cases reported compared to 724 in 2024.

Road traffic accidents (RTA) saw a significant decline following special enforcement drives. Total accidents decreased by 8.8%, with 520 cases in 2025 versus 578 in 2024, while fatal accidents dropped by 14.55%, from 213 to 182. Despite an 8% increase in vehicles on the road—from 8.11 lakh to 8.67 lakh—the accident rate per lakh population in Tripura fell to 12.35, well below the national average of 34.6 in 2023.

DGP Anurag highlighted that police enforcement and crime detection improved by 11%, contributing to the decline. Seizures of cannabis rose by 14%, while cough syrup and tablets saw a sharp rise of 145% and 26.37% respectively. Additionally, 95% more ganja plants were destroyed. Total assets seized surged to Rs 1,636 crore in 2025, nearly double the Rs 849 crore seized in 2024.

The DGP credited enhanced policing measures, stricter law enforcement, and community cooperation for making 2025 a record-breaking year for public safety in Tripura.
