Tripura Registers Normal Rainfall in May Despite Pre-Monsoon Deficit

Agartala, 6th June 2025:  Tripura recorded normal rainfall during May 2025, according to the Meteorological Centre in Agartala. The state received 419.6 mm of rainfall during the month, slightly above the normal average of 403.5 mm, marking a 4% excess.

However, the overall pre-monsoon season—from March 1 to May 31—registered a 16% rainfall deficiency, with cumulative precipitation recorded at 555.4 mm.

“Compared to last year, rainfall in May was higher. In May 2024, the state had received 391.9 mm of rainfall,” stated the report issued by the Meteorological Centre on Friday. Among all districts, Kailashahar in Unakoti topped the charts with the highest monthly rainfall of 658.1 mm. North Tripura recorded the highest cumulative rainfall during the season, at 532.2 mm—18% above the normal average.

The report also highlighted that the highest single-day rainfall occurred on May 30 at Bishramganj in Sepahijala district, which received 211.0 mm of rain in just 24 hours.

Temperature data from Agartala Airport showed the maximum temperature peaked at 38.5°C on May 10. The average maximum temperature throughout the month stood at 34.3°C, which is 1.1°C higher than normal. Meanwhile, the lowest temperature of the month was 21.8°C on May 2, with an average minimum of 25.3°C—1.5°C above normal. A squall was also reported over Agartala Airport on May 10, with wind speeds reaching 46 kmph.

The Meteorological Centre has advised residents and authorities to stay alert, as the southwest monsoon is expected to arrive shortly.
