Agartala, 11th July 2025:   The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) has announced an ambitious plan to install smart electricity meters across the state by March 2027, aiming to modernise energy infrastructure under the Centre’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme.

According to TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu, 88,748 smart meters have already been installed out of a targeted six lakh units. The initiative is being implemented through projects funded by the Asian Development Bank, with a total estimated cost of ₹603 crore.

Speaking at a press conference here, Basu said the corporation has prioritised installations at key government premises, including residences and official quarters of ministers, MLAs, and top bureaucrats. “This strategic rollout is part of our effort to build trust in the smart meter programme and spearhead the state’s transition to a smart grid,” he stated.

Smart meters, Basu noted, are equipped with advanced communication technologies that enable remote and automated reading of electricity consumption. “Consumers and TSECL will receive real-time usage data, removing the need for manual meter readings,” he said, highlighting additional features like prepaid and postpaid billing, mobile app integration, and fault detection.

The meters transmit data wirelessly typically via cellular or Wi-Fi networks ensuring seamless monitoring and accurate billing. “This will significantly reduce human error, allowing consumers to be billed precisely for their actual usage,” Basu added.

With the state’s energy sector undergoing a major digital overhaul, TSECL’s initiative marks a critical move towards sustainable and transparent power distribution in Tripura.
