Tripura Sets September 28 for Village Committee Polls; Nearly 9.62 Lakh Voters Eligible

Date:

Agartala, 31st August 2026 :  The State Election Commission (SEC) on Monday announced the much-awaited schedule for elections to the Village Committees (VCs) under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), with polling to be held on September 28 across the state.

The counting of votes will commence from 7:00 AM on October 5, while the complete election process is scheduled to conclude by October 8.State Election Commissioner PK Chakraborty announced the schedule at a press conference in Agartala in the presence of SEC Secretary Anurag Sen and DGP-in-Charge GS Rao.

The elections are being held for 587 Village Committees, covering 2,634 constituencies and 4,597 seats. The Village Committees had completed their elected term on March 8, 2021, but the elections remained pending for several years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent legal issues.

The SEC said preparatory work for the polls had begun in 2022, including the preparation of electoral rolls, identification of polling stations and other necessary administrative arrangements. With the legal and administrative hurdles now cleared, preparations have been accelerated to conduct the elections.

The formal election notification will be issued on September 1. The nomination process will remain open until September 8, followed by scrutiny of nomination papers on September 9. Candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations until September 11.

For effective management of the elections, District Magistrates and Collectors of all eight districts have been designated as District Election Officers. The BDOs of 52 RD Blocks have been appointed as Electoral Registration Officers.

The SEC has also appointed 231 Assistant Returning Officers and 373 Sector Officers. Around 8,500 polling personnel are expected to be engaged in the election process, while Election Observers will be deployed across the poll-bound blocks.

As per the final electoral rolls, 9,61,977 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise. The electorate includes 4,82,041 male voters, 4,79,930 female voters and six third-gender voters. The Commission has identified 1,550 polling stations for the elections.

The SEC said voting would be conducted using ballot boxes to ensure the secrecy of the ballot. Counting centres will be established at Block Headquarters and other suitable locations, subject to approval by the State Election Commissioner.

The Commission also said that consultations had been held with recognised national and state political parties during the preparation of electoral rolls and finalisation of polling stations.

Security arrangements have been reviewed in coordination with the police administration. Adequate security personnel will be deployed across the poll-bound areas to maintain law and order and ensure a peaceful voting process.

With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect in all Village Committee areas going to polls under the TTAADC.

The SEC said all necessary arrangements were being put in place to ensure that the long-pending elections are conducted in a free, fair and peaceful manner.
