Agartala, 21st March 2026: During the ongoing Assembly session, Tripura Chief Minister stated that the case regarding the regularization of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers has reached the Supreme Court. However, the Chief Minister appeared unaware of the detailed developments surrounding the matter.
On February 23, 2021, the High Court directed the state government to regularize all SSA teachers and extend pension benefits. Subsequently, the government introduced a scheme under which only two teachers began receiving salaries on a regular scale. Dissatisfied with this arrangement, SSA teachers challenged the scheme in the High Court.
On July 16, 2024, the High Court issued a clear directive to the state government, ruling that teachers appointed before July 29, 2011, would not require TET qualifications. Prior to coming to power, the BJP had promised to regularize SSA teachers within three months of forming government. Yet, on September 27, 2024, the state filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court. SSA teachers were present during the hearing of the case.
In its submission before the Supreme Court, the government argued that TET examinations should be made mandatory for all teachers. This contradicted the High Court’s earlier ruling. The Chief Minister’s remarks in the Assembly, made without full knowledge of the case, drew sharp criticism from the Tripura SSA Teachers’ Welfare Association.
Today, the association’s state president Sajal Deb along with general secretary Bipul Debbarma and other members addressed a press conference at the Agartala Press Club. They strongly condemned the Chief Minister’s statement and reaffirmed their demand for regularization without mandatory TET for those appointed before 2011.
