Tripura targets 500 MW renewable energy by 2030

Date:

Agartala, 14th October 2026 : Tripura has set a target of generating 500 MW of renewable energy by 2030, with the state government focusing on expanding solar power, modernising electricity infrastructure and ensuring affordable and reliable energy for consumers.

The target was highlighted during the observance of World Standards Day 2026 at the corporate office auditorium of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) on Wednesday. The programme was jointly organised by the Indian Building Congress (Tripura State Centre) and TSECL under the theme, “A Shared Vision for a Better World: Affordable and Clean Energy.”

Addressing the gathering, TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu stressed the importance of clean energy in ensuring long-term energy security amid rising electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence and modern technologies. He said renewable energy expansion was essential to meeting future requirements without increasing environmental pressure.

Basu informed that Tripura currently has approximately 17 MW of installed rooftop solar capacity. Plans are being considered to install rooftop solar systems across 1.5 lakh households, with a proposed capacity of 150 MW. The corporation is also exploring an electricity storage system of around 200 MWh at the 33 kV level.

Other initiatives include converting more than 5,000 drinking water pumps to solar power and imparting solar technology training to local youths.

He also emphasised that power distribution companies must maintain financial sustainability while upgrading technology, improving energy efficiency and ensuring reliable services.

Engineer Chinmoy Debnath, National President of the Indian Building Congress; Hemanta Verma, Chairman of the Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission; and other dignitaries attended the programme. Keynote addresses were delivered by Subhadeep Bhattacharya, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at NIT Agartala, and TSECL General Manager Swapan Debbarma.

Experts underlined the importance of standards in accelerating clean energy adoption and promoting sustainable development.
