Agartala, 1st December 2025:    In yet another major drug bust, Assam police at the Churaibari watch post intercepted a truck carrying a huge consignment of cannabis smuggled from Tripura. The driver, identified as Rakesh Chakraborty of Jirania subdivision in West Tripura, was arrested with the contraband valued at over ₹2 crore in the black market.

According to police sources, the incident occurred around 8 a.m. on Monday when a twelve-wheeler truck bearing registration number NL06A-7358 crossed into Assam from Tripura’s Jirania area. During routine checks, officers initially found the vehicle empty. However, a closer inspection of the truck’s outer body revealed 68 packets of dry cannabis neatly stacked along both sides of the vehicle, weighing a total of 370 kilograms.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Anirban Sharma confirmed the seizure, stating that the market value of the confiscated cannabis exceeds Rs 2 crore. The driver admitted before the media that he was transporting the consignment from Jirania to Shillong for a payment of Rs 30,000. He further confessed to having smuggled cannabis out of Tripura on previous occasions.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and investigations are underway.

The incident has once again highlighted the failure of Tripura police’s anti-narcotics operations, as the truck managed to pass through multiple police jurisdictions including West Tripura, Khowai, Dhalai, Unakoti and North Tripura without detection. The successful interception by Assam police underscores the continuing challenges faced by Tripura authorities in curbing the state’s growing drug trafficking problem.
