Agartala, 28th December 2025: Protests erupted across Tripura following the death of Angel Chakma, an MBA student who succumbed to injuries from an alleged racial attack in Dehradun on December 9. Angel and his brother Michael were reportedly assaulted near a liquor shop after the attackers allegedly made racial remarks.
Indigenous student and youth organizations have demanded strict action against the perpetrators and intervention from the Ministry of Home Affairs to address rising racial violence against Northeastern people. The Tipra Indigenous Students Federation (TISF) held a candlelight march in Agartala, calling for safety and justice. Youth Tipra Federation president Suraj Debbarma highlighted ongoing racism faced by Northeastern people, who are often derogatorily labeled “Chinese,” “Momo,” or accused of eating unusual foods.
The Tripura Chakma Students’ Association (TCSA) announced protests, including a candlelight vigil on December 29 and submitting a memorandum to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on December 30, emphasizing police negligence and demanding accountability.
The Twipra Students Federation (TSF), part of the North East Students Organisation, condemned the attack and warned that such incidents are not isolated. They demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the attackers, investigation under laws addressing murder and hate crimes, and stronger protections and safety mechanisms for Northeastern students across India, calling for urgent government intervention to prevent further racial violence.
