Agartala, 28th February 2026: As part of a nationwide push to curb cervical cancer, the Government of India has rolled out a three-month Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination drive targeting adolescent girls across the country.
The national campaign was formally launched today by Narendra Modi from Ajmer. In Tripura, the state-level inauguration took place at IGM Hospital, with Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha joining the programme virtually.
Under the initiative, girls aged 14 years and above but below 15 years are eligible to receive the HPV vaccine free of cost. Officials said that around 17,500 adolescent girls in Tripura are expected to benefit during the three-month campaign.
Vaccination services will be provided through all routine immunisation platforms, including Agartala Government Medical College and GB Hospital, IGM Hospital, Tripura Medical College, as well as primary health centres, community health centres, sub-divisional hospitals and district hospitals across the state.
Medical experts note that HPV infection is the primary cause of cervical cancer. Data from the World Health Organization indicate that thousands of women in India are diagnosed with the disease every year. Health professionals underline that timely vaccination, along with regular screening and awareness, can substantially reduce future risks.
To ensure effective monitoring, the campaign will be tracked through U-WIN (Universal Immunization WIN), a digital platform of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare that records and manages immunisation data nationwide.
The launch event in Agartala was attended by several dignitaries, including Rajib Bhattacharjee, senior health department officials and medical administrators, reflecting the state’s coordinated effort to strengthen cervical cancer prevention.
