Agartala, 11th April 2025:   In a boost to grassroots empowerment and climate resilience, Tripura’s Drinking Water and Sanitation Department has completed seven community-centric water conservation projects using rainwater harvesting techniques, turning check dams into lifelines for remote and water-scarce areas of the state.

These projects, centered around rain-fed reservoirs, are now supplying clean and usable water to residents who previously struggled with access to consistent sources. More than just infrastructure, officials say the initiative has fostered a culture of self-reliance and environmental awareness in participating communities.

“Water isn’t just a resource—it’s power in the hands of the people. These reservoirs are reducing dependence on depleting groundwater while promoting local water security,” said a senior official from the department.

Three more rainwater-based initiatives are in queue for inauguration, and two additional ones are under active construction. The department’s bottom-up approach has garnered attention for its blend of sustainability and inclusivity, setting an example for decentralized water governance.

By investing in nature-based solutions like rainwater harvesting, Tripura is not only preparing for an uncertain environmental future but also bringing rural voices and needs to the forefront of water policy.
