Agartala, 29th March 2026: High in the tranquil Jampui Hills of Tripura’s North District, Vangmun village has emerged as a beacon of resilience and community-driven innovation. Once plagued by severe water shortages, the village has now become a testament to sustainable living, earning special mention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent Mann Ki Baat address.
Addressing the challenges posed by the onset of summer across India, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of strengthening collective efforts for water conservation. Initiatives like the Jal Sanchay Abhiyan have played a vital role in raising awareness over the last decade, resulting in the construction of nearly 50 lakh artificial water harvesting structures nationwide.
PM Modi highlighted how villages across India are increasingly taking matters into their own hands—reviving traditional ponds, implementing rainwater harvesting systems, and embracing local solutions to tackle water scarcity. The Amrit Sarovar Abhiyan has also contributed significantly, with nearly 70,000 water bodies being developed and maintained in preparation for the monsoon.
Vangmun village stands out among these success stories. Situated at roughly 3,000 feet above sea level, residents once faced extreme hardship during summers, often walking long distances to access water. United by a shared determination, the villagers embarked on a mission to capture and conserve every drop of rainfall.
Today, the transformation is evident. Almost every household in Vangmun now has rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, turning a village once defined by scarcity into a shining example of water self-sufficiency and environmental stewardship.
