Agartala, 23rd  February 2026 :   In a major haul, police at Srinagar Police Station in West Tripura seized a large consignment of Burmese cigarettes worth approximately Rs 60 lakh and arrested the truck driver. The seizure took place on the Khayarpur bypass road, which has long been a hotspot for smugglers using it as a free passage for transporting illegal goods. Due to insufficient intelligence, police are unable to intercept smugglers in every instance, allowing illegal activities along the bypass to increase.

Acting on a tip-off on Sunday night, OC Aronuday Das of Srinagar Police Station, along with Second Officer Narayan Sen, other police personnel, and TSR forces, set up a covert checkpoint on the bypass. A container truck bearing registration number TR 05 J 1706, coming from Khayarpur, was stopped and searched. During the search, police recovered 3 lakh 70 thousand cigarettes packed in 37 boxes and arrested the truck driver.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday night, OC Aronuday Das stated that the seized cigarettes were intended for smuggling outside the state. The total estimated value of the confiscated contraband is around Rs 60 lakh. Legal action is being initiated against the truck driver in connection with the case.
