True politicians serve society, clean its messes: Power Minister

Agartala, 7th January 2026 :   Parliament Affairs and Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath today said that political figures should have big hearts. The late Bishwa Bandhu Sen was a big-hearted man. He used to believe in nationalist thinking, and his passing away is a big loss.

The Minister said this while addressing a condolence ceremony in memory of the late Speaker Bishwa Bandhu Sen at the Assembly today.

The Minister said that in the early 1980s, he met the late Bishwa Bandhu Sen. He was not only a political person but also a poet, literary figure, singer, and actor.

“He used to listen to Rabindra Sangeet in his free time. He was very close to the people of Dharmanagar. Those who have left us, including former Chief Ministers and Speakers—do you remember them? I doubt it. Bishwa Bandhu was a very close person to us. During various political activities, we worked together and through this we became close to each other. He used to believe in nationalist thinking,” said the Minister.

He informed that Bishwa Bandhu Sen was engaged in student politics and was against dictatorship rule.

“I was also the Opposition Leader at that time. He was very well aware of Assembly affairs. He showed the government the path on how to work for the people. In the Assembly, whether we were in opposition or now in the ruling party, he used to raise very important matters for the welfare of the people. We know that no one will remain forever, but memories will remain. His passing away is a great loss to us. In politics, there are very few people who are also engaged in cultural activities,” he said.

The Minister said, “I think politics is the authoritative allocation of values for a society. In fact, many have associated politics with art. So we can say, ‘Politics is a classical art performed by creative and generative people.’

“Those who cannot properly understand the true meaning and essence of the word politics interpret it incorrectly. That is why all negative things are spread about politics. Many people also want to identify politics as a profession. However, all political scientists and political philosophers of the world have considered politics a great and significant responsibility and accountability. Without continuous responsibility to society, without a commitment to self-dedication and sacrifice for the welfare of society, the state, and the world, one cannot be successful in politics. So, in the real sense, politics is a work of self-sacrifice for the welfare of society, the state, and the world.”

He added that politicians often face abuse, but politicians clean up the filth of society or the dirty things in the sewers—no one else does.

During the event, Deputy Speaker Ramprasad Paul, Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy, and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury were present.
