TSECL Issues Safety Advisory on AC Usage Amid Rising Heat

Date:

Agartala, 2nd July 2026:  Amid an intense heatwave sweeping across the region, electricity consumption has surged significantly as more households are increasingly installing and using air conditioners (ACs).

In response to the growing demand and concerns over electrical safety, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited has issued an important public advisory urging consumers to follow safety guidelines and upgrade their sanctioned electrical load before installing new AC units.

According to the utility, many households are adding air conditioners without increasing their approved electricity load, which can place excessive pressure on domestic wiring systems. Officials warned that such practices may lead to serious risks, including short circuits, fire hazards, damage to meters and electrical infrastructure, and potential disruptions in power supply to surrounding areas.

The corporation has clearly instructed consumers to visit their nearest electricity office and apply for load enhancement before installing any new high-power appliances such as air conditioners. This step, they emphasized, is essential not only for household safety but also for maintaining the stability of the overall power distribution system.

Alongside the advisory, the utility has also issued a set of best practices for safe and efficient AC usage. Consumers are encouraged to schedule regular servicing of air conditioners at least once a year, keep outdoor units clean and unobstructed, and maintain indoor temperature settings between 24°C and 26°C for optimal energy efficiency. The use of BEE 5-star rated appliances is also recommended to reduce electricity consumption.

Other guidelines include ensuring proper earthing, avoiding the use of multiple high-load appliances on a single circuit, and immediately addressing unusual noises or odors from AC units by contacting trained technicians. Users are also advised not to block air inlets or outlets and to combine AC usage with ceiling fans to improve cooling efficiency.

Officials reiterated that responsible energy consumption and adherence to safety regulations are crucial. They stressed that timely load enhancement, proper maintenance, and awareness can prevent accidents, reduce electricity wastage, and ensure uninterrupted power supply during peak summer demand.

The advisory has been issued in the public interest to promote both consumer safety and sustainable electricity usage across the state.
